Kanye West is no ODB…just a Bastard!

“Wu-Tang is for the children.”

During the 1998 Grammy Awards (for the 1997 music year), Puff Daddy won the sympathy vote and took home not only the Best Duo or Group Performance (for “I’ll Be Missing You”) as well as Best Rap Album (for No Way Out).  The latter was in competition with Wu-Tang Clan’s Wu-Tang Forever.

No Way Out really did not deserve to win, and I am not even stating that Wu’s album should have won as the Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death and Wyclef Jean’s album were also better than Puffy’s release.  Nevertheless, he won and the Ol’ Dirty Bastard was upset.

I mean, he bought a suit just for the occasion.  The ODB’s outrage seemed somewhat “sincere.”  I mean, listen to the Wu-Tang’s lyrics.  They are obviously for the kids!  But really, it was just the ODB being the ODB…or Big Baby Jesus!

Jump forward to the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, a celebration of their former image of MTV (you know, as a channel for music videos!).  [Honestly, I did not know that MTV still aired videos as I have not watched in years].  And apparently someone was a bit upset that Beyonce lost out to a country singer.

While Beyonce won video of the year, she lost to Taylor Swift for best female video.  And honestly, Beyonce’s video was better and P!nk’s video was probably the best in that latter category.  But hey, Beyonce still grabbed one (well, she actually grabbed three).

Oh, but someone was pissed…and it was not Beyonce!

Kayne West, like an ass-hat, jumped up on stage and dissed the Best Female Video winner Swift, who appeared dumbfounded by West’s stupidity.

“Yo, Taylor.  I’m gonna let you finish.  But Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!”  [link...CLICK ME!!]

Get off the stage, clown!

Jumping up on stage and yelling Wu for the kids is something we expect from the ODB!

Jumping up on stage and yelling "Wu for the kids" is something we expect from the ODB!

This is not like ODB’s interruption.  First off, the ODB did not come on stage while Puffy was making his acceptance speech.  He waited to jump up just after Shawn Colvin’s was announced as winner of Song of the Year, scaring her in the process it seemed.  And, well, the Ol’ Dirty Bastard is right…Wu-Tang is the best!

Plus, those kind of antics are expected from the ODB.  He is crazy!  Well, was crazy.  But Kayne West is not crazy and jumping on stage seems out of character and those were not really the antics we would expect.

West’s ego-trip was misguided and his ire misplaced.  Swift, someone that I did not even know until this morning, was embarrassed and flustered by West’s attack.  And, although he was brief with his “tirade,” even Beyonce (and the other nominees for Best Female Video) were unhappy with his antics.  Also, he is wrong to begin with.  Beyonce’s video is NOT the best of all-time, or even this decade.  Not sure it was even the best from this year.

But here is where it gets better.  This is not the first time West has pulled his bitch fest.  After losing the 2004 American Music Award for Best New Artist to country singer Gretchen Wilson, calling it bullshit and, allegedly her music bullshit.  He did later apologize.

He later in 2005 prior to the Grammys, he bitched that everyone was out to get him and that his garbage album should have been labeled a “classic” by Vibe and Source magazines.  And then towards the end of his rant tells people who criticize him or question his statements, “Who are you?  I don’t know you!?”  He’d go on to win three Grammys, all in the rap category.  But, could not win the general categories.  Guess Late Registration was not “classic” enough to transcend the rap category.

That was followed up by his drunken tirade at the 2006 MTV European Music Awards.  After losing to the electronic collaboration between Justice and Simian (“We Are Your Friends”), he comes up claiming “Oh, hell no!” (to which I believe one of the members of Simian calls him “Canyon.”).  He let’s the award winners know (who he calls one of them n***a), that the video cost a million dollars and had Pam Anderson in it.  Well, fuck-a-doodle-doo!  You lost, dickweed!

His arrogance is amazing.  In the montage to the nominees for the Best Video at the MTV EMA, he claims that he is one of the three best artists in the world (of course, he is basing it only on Western [and like only U.S.ian] music as I doubt he listens to much beyond that).  During an episode of “Punk’d” he kept stating that he had to leave for Paris, but pompously pronounced it as the French do (paʁi like “Pair-ee”).  He is attempting to show how much higher he is than everyone.

You know, given the shots he has taken, I see a trend!  Gretchen Wilson — white!  The members of Justice and Simian — white!  And now, Taylor Swift — white!!!  Is Kanye West a racist!?  Well, I’ll just leave that open.

He is no ODB. And he is no Flava Flav, either. He is simple a dipshit!

He is no ODB. And he is no Flava Flav, either. He is simple a dipshit!

Hmm, actually looking back at his history of tirades against white artists and, well, really everyone, maybe his antics at the MTV Video Music Awards should have been expected.  But really, it was just Kanye West being Kanye West…or being “Canyon” West!

So there are some similarities.  But, West is no ODB.  West’s style is common and has been done over and over again.  The Ol’ Dirty Bastard was unique…after all there was no father to his style!  Any video with the ODB in it is better that West’s videos…and likely did not cost a million dollars.

Furthermore, I do not think that Big Baby Jesus ever apologized for his outburst.  To me, that means he was sincere about his statement and meant what he said.  It was not just being pissed off in the “heat of the moment.”  He truly believed that the Wu should have won!  Kanye West just came off as bitter.  His quick turn around to apologize (to Wilson and to Swift) just means he was pissed that either did not win or the person he wanted to win lost.    I am sure he believes he should have won (or Beyonce should have won), but he comes off as bitter and egotistical.

This is why the ODB can get away with jumping up on stage.  After all, he is the Ol’ Dirty Bastard, while Kanye West is simply a bastard!

  1. [...] If you want to see an award show interruption that’s much more fun, check out ODB at the Grammy’s. (Via Wrongspeech.) [...]

  2. Kanye is not racist because he has collaberated with many white artists in the past and even promote Justice’s hit single “D.A.N.C.E.” on MTV. Kanye also has the best videos because they are done by the best-Spike Jonze, Hype Williams, Michel Gondry, and those guys who directed the D.A.N.C.E video. Not even Wu~Tang can beat that!Kanye has experimented with many Genres so he should have won something outside of the rap catagory especially with 808s since it wasn’t even Rap!

    • well…now i feel better!

however, perhaps you remember John Rocker. if not, look him up. you will likely find his tirade where he attacks every minority that he could think of, particularly immigrants. oh, but he is not racist, right? do you know why? because he played on a team with “Spanish-speakers.” so obviously he is not racist!

your argument is just as weak. it is akin to someone saying they are not a racist because they listen to rap music, or have a black friend. just because he [Kayne] works with “many white artists” does not exonerate him and automatically mean he is not a racist.

now, i did not explicitly state that West was a racist. but there is a peculiar pattern.

  3. The pattern is shit because not only does Kanye work with people he also has many friends who are white like LadyGaGa and I’m pretty sure his girl is white too! Say whatever you want about him but don’t try to lead people on making others hate him even more.

The way I see it is Kanye is a nice guy who had a huge Ego problem which is gone now and this time he just has a huge drinking problem which just made him look bad on TV once again. Kanye obviously needs to take a LOOONG break to deal with all this.

    • I told no one to say that West was a racist. I presented the situation and am leaving the decision up to the reader. Again, just because he works with whites does not mean he likes them. In any type of business, one will be willing to work with anyone to advance their personal agenda.

You continue to defend him despite his ego problem (which you admit he has…well, used to have, according to you) and drinking problem. I do not know him personally, and I would wager you do not either. So we are both speculating. But from what I have seen from him, he is not a nice guy.

  4. [...] made the argument (tongue-in-cheek) that Kayne West was a racist due to his antics.  And a commenter here noted that he has worked with white artists.  But, that [...]
